Nancy Rose lives surrounded by nature in Nova Scotia, Canada. She grew up in a large family where creativity was always encouraged, and when she wasn’t teaching, she was crafting. In 2010 she discovered the curiosity of the little North American Red Squirrels who raided the bird feeders in her backyard. By making squirrel-size props, she has created hundreds of scenarios where the inquisitive squirrels find themselves in some rather human-like poses as they search for peanuts. Gradually the “secret life” of her backyard squirrels emerged. Her first “actor”, Mr. Peanuts, has been followed by many more who come daily for peanuts and sunflower seeds. Sometimes she gets a good shot right away, but more often it takes hundreds of photos to get a clearly focused shot that tells the story Nancy has in her head. In 2013 the squirrel photos went viral. They have been featured in media around the world and the squirrels now star in four childrens books from Little, Brown Young Readers and in calendars and board books for Workman Publishing. Her sixth book is due to ship in summer 2023.
